New 3-tier Architecture

A three tier system has a client tier and a database tier, but - between these two - there is a service layer. For Dynamics NAV, this layer is called the NAV Service Tier, or NST. The RoleTailored client connects to the NST instead of to the database directly, and all business logic resides in the NST.

As the business logic is using the NST, parties(end user) cannot gain access to sensitive data merely by hacking a client. Also, customization and integration scenarios are greatly improved, as programming interfaces are hosted by NST not by client tier.
